Planet Wellbeing: How Virtual Reality is Fighting Loneliness Among the Elderly
Source: BBC News
Loneliness among older adults is a growing crisis in the UK, affecting over 1.4 million elderly people according to Age UK. But a groundbreaking project is harnessing the power of virtual reality (VR) to help change that.
Sheffield Hallam University has partnered with Age UK Sheffield to launch a pioneering initiative called ‘Planet Wellbeing’, designed to help older adults engage in virtual activities, connect socially, and stay active—all from the comfort of their surroundings.
How It Works
- Elderly volunteers wear VR headsets to enter immersive virtual worlds.
- They participate in activities like dancing, card games, and social interactions.
- The goal is to reduce isolation and improve mental well-being.
- The project runs for 18 months, building on over a decade of research into VR and physical activity.
- Funded by Innovate UK’s 2023 Mindset Extended Reality for Digital Mental Health, it integrates advanced immersive technologies.
Expert Insights
Dr Ben Heller, associate professor at Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, believes VR is a game-changer for elderly health:
“Our research has shown that older people are more motivated to exercise through fun, social activities in virtual worlds. This ties perfectly into our mission to improve health and wellbeing through movement.”
Teresa Barker, CEO of Age UK Sheffield, also sees immense potential:
“This project could revolutionise how we support mental health and wellbeing for older people. By bringing them together in a virtual space, we can combat isolation in an innovative and engaging way.”
Why It Matters
- Loneliness is a major health risk: Studies link social isolation to increased risks of depression, dementia, and heart disease.
- VR can provide social connection: Users feel engaged, stimulated, and connected, even if they are physically alone.
- Encourages movement and mental stimulation: The platform promotes exercise, cognitive engagement, and social interaction.
The Future of Elderly Care?
The results of this trial will be carefully analysed, and if successful, Planet Wellbeing could be rolled out nationwide, transforming elderly care across the UK.
At Apex Life Care, we are passionate about supporting innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for older adults. This project aligns with our mission to integrate technology, wellbeing, and social care for a brighter future.
